India is witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases again. As of 19 May 2025, 257 active cases have been reported in the country. Of these, Kerala (69 cases), Maharashtra (44 cases) and Tamil Nadu (34 cases) are the worst-affected states. There have been two COVID-19-related deaths at Mumbai's KEM Hospital, although officials say these deaths were due to pre-existing serious illnesses.

Covid-19 situation in India

According to the Ministry of Health, the Covid-19 situation in India is under control and no major outbreak is expected. Experts believe that Covid-19 has now become a compound disease, which means that cases can increase every six to nine months.

Covid-19 situation in Singapore and Hong Kong

Singapore and Hong Kong are witnessing a rapid increase in Covid-19 cases. Weekly cases in Singapore have increased by 28%, and Hong Kong has recorded 31 Covid-19-related deaths, the highest in the last one year. In both these places, infections are increasing due to Omicron's new subtypes LF.7 and NB.1.8.
What precautions should be taken?
According to health experts, symptoms of the new subtype of Covid-19 include persistent cough, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, eye irritation and sometimes confusion. However, most people are recovering at home and do not require hospitalization.

Are vaccines available in India?

GEMCOVAC-19, an mRNA vaccine, is available in India, which is effective against the Omicron variant. Experts say its production can be increased in India if needed.

Conclusion

The Covid-19 situation in India is under control, but the rise in cases in Singapore and Hong Kong is a matter of concern. Experts say it is necessary to maintain vigilance and follow health guidelines to prevent the spread of the infection.
